The Importance of Rooting

Rooting is a fundamental practice in the Universal Tao system. Taoist practitioners focus on rootedness. A strong root can be compared to the foundation of a building. The strength of the foundation in part determines how high the building can be built and how difficult it will be to topple.

The principle of rooting is to become like a rod positioned at a 45-degree angle. When you push the end of the rod at a right angle, the force travels into the ground. If your body alignment is joined with the Earth, when the force comes at you it will go right through you and into the ground. The rod is not what is powerful. It is the Earth underneath it that has the power, although naturally the rod has to be strong to pass the force (fig. 4.1).

The foot, the leg, and the knee can all be adjusted to be like a rod angled at 45 degrees, protruding from the ground. No matter what position you are in, always bear in mind that your body must be aligned with the Earth so that the force will not stay in the joints but can pass through the bones to the ground (fig. 4.2). If your body is not aligned so that the force can pass through the structure, you will fall (fig. 4.3).

The more that practitioners can root to Mother Earth, the more balanced their energies will be. Such balance increases healing energy. After mastering the Rooting Practice, as you move about in your daily life you will feel that you are more in touch with the Earth. You will feel more stable and practical minded. After practicing Iron Shirt Rooting for a while, many Universal Tao students find that they have good balance and that their performance of various physical activities is greatly improved.
